 A Balance-Driven Life

In today's microwave-I-want-it-now world, it's challenging to live a balance-driven life. Yes, we want to and it is admirable but how many of us actually do it? Byron and Catherine Pulsifer once wrote, "Balance in your life between work and your personal life is very important. Without balance, you eventually burnout negatively affecting your performance at work." The boundaries between work and home have been changing for years. The days of "eight to five it" don't exist anymore, so we must diligently control what's important in our life; if not there will be consequences.

Jim had been married for nearly 20 years and was the father of two teenage children. He was the lead sales person for the chemical division at XYZ Corp., where he had been with the company for seven years. It was widely believed that he was the top sales person in the organization. He was passionate about his work, so much so he constantly thought about it on weekends and even while on family vacations. Jim routinely worked 10-12 hour days and the wear and tear of his schedule began to take a toll on his health and life at home. After long days at the office, sales calls or out-of-town trips, he found himself awake until the wee hours of the morning trying to as he put it, "unwind." Because of Jim's self-imposed, over-worked work schedule, he had no outlet. He didn't exercise, play golf or spend relaxing time with the family. He also didn't eat properly. It was not unusual to hear him complain of always being tired.

What about you? Do you complain about always being tired? When you're at work, do you think of things that need to be done at home? When you're home, do you think of things that need to be done at work? Do you have poor eating habits and do not exercise? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you're life might be out of balance and perhaps it's time for you to reassess your priorities.

One way to live a balance-driven life is to prioritize what is and what should be important to you. This can be done by:

  1. Making a list of the people and things such as spirituality, exercise, family, friends or work that are important to you.
  2. Make time for them on your calendar.
  3. Do it!
I hope this helps. Good luck in 2010 and beyond.
