Dear Reader,

Recently, Fran Magoni sent me an email she received from an alumnus of the Servant Leadership Program. He recently transferred to Auburn University to attend their Aerospace Engineering Degree program. He shares how Emergenetics helped him refine his degree to one that was better suited to his preferences and skills. Below is an exerpt that I wanted to share with you. If you are interested in taking Emergenetics, be sure to see the information below. Our next Emergenetics workshop is on March 16, 2010. Have a great February!

From Aerospace to Industrial: One College Student's Reflection on Emergenetics

Left Brain
Analytical (Blue): clear thinker, logical problem solver, enjoys math, rational, learns by mental analysis
Structural (Green): practical thinker, likes guidelines, cautious of new ideas, predictable, learns by doing

Right Brain
Social (Red): intuitive about people, socially aware, sympathetic, empathetic, learns from others
Conceptual (Yellow): Imaginative, intuitive about ideas, visionary, enjoys the unusual, learns by experimenting

When I was at CSU and in SL I took Emergenetics and my results said I was red/green. At the time I didn't want to accept that because I'm an engineer and that's blue thinking so it had to be wrong, right? Well, fast forward to last semester and it hit me, Emergenetics was right. I am not a blue thinker. I can do blue thinking but not for very long, which was the problem I was having because the majority of AERO [Aerospace Engineering] classes are that type of thinking. I could barely handle one AERO class by itself, so taking four at the same time nearly killed me, which led me back to my Emergenetics results when I was trying to figure out why. When I thought about the way I think as a red/green thinker it made sense. I like solving problems, figuring out ways to fix things, make things faster, more efficient, and I like working with people (I discovered that in my volunteer work). So after determining that my current major no longer fit, I started looking at other engineering fields and the only one that really fits my personality is Industrial. They don't design products and parts (all the icky math stuff) but look at existing products and systems and figure out ways to make them better or more efficient. It focuses more on the people side of engineering like making a product work better stuff like that.

Thanks for having me take Emergenetics. Knowing what my thinking preferences are and what they mean really helps me.
